The Wildcats basketball team dominated from start to finish in the championship game of the Alverno Tip-Off Classic. St. Kate's built a 25-8 lead early in the game and cruised to a 77-56 victory over tournament host Alverno College.
The Wildcats used their size and athleticism to out play the Inferno in virtually every category. St. Kate's outscored Alverno 40-18 in the paint, out rebounded them 43-29, had a 25-0 advantage in bench points, and shot 52.6% from the field while holding Alverno to 27.8% shooting for the game.
Three players scored in double figures for the Wildcats, led by Laura Kalbfell's 16 points. Kalbfell also grabbed 10 rebounds, giving her a double-double in both games this weekend. Molly Peterson added 15 points, while shooting 5-7 from the field. Point guard Jessica Arechigo added 11 points, 2 assists, 1 steal and 5 rebounds in a winning effort.
Molly Peterson and Laura Kalbfell were both named to the All-Tournament team.
Coach Rufsvold was pleased with the team's effort all weekend long, noting that he "saw a lot of good things this weekend. We still have plenty to work on and improve before the start of conference play, but I am happy with how we handled ourselves this weekend."
The Wildcats have their home opener at 3 pm on Saturday November 29 against Nebraska Wesleyan.
